Once again irony is at play because Uncle Charlie is also at the table in this scene and has just made a compelling speech against women when he is suspected of being the widow killer in the newspaper article that young Charlie had found earlier. This outrages young Charlie as she is fed up with how much her father and Herbie talk about murder. In Herbie’s third appearance, he shows up at dinner right after Uncle Charlie’s telling speech about “silly stupid women.” He exclaims to Joseph that mushrooms are the perfect murder weapon if you mix some poisonous ones with real ones. This is ironic that the two are talking about murder as an actual killer is in their house and actually is Joe’s brother in law. Herbie and Joe then have a dialogue about using untraceable poison in coffee to kill the other. When she comes home, she sees her father and Herbie outside and goes in the house using the back entrance to avoid seeing her Uncle Charlie. Herbie’s next appearance comes after young Charlie finds out that Jack is a detective and not a journalist. This in correlation to young Charlie’s beginning of speculation, starts to give the audience the feeling that Uncle Charlie has something to hide. When Herbie walks in he is shown holding crime and mystery books eluding to the possibility Uncle Charlie may be hiding something. This initial appearance of Herbie gives the audience some clues that Uncle Charlie may be in fact a murderer or has something to hide. During this scene, we find out that Herbie and Joseph are good friends and like to past the time talking about murder mysteries and better yet, how they would murder each other without being caught. Herbie is introduced standing awkwardly near a doorway while the rest of the family is together.

Hitchcock’s 1943 film, Shadow of a Doubt, features many of his iconic filming techniques such as the use of stairs, close-ups, sharp editing, and theme of doubles.
